CATHEDRAL OF OUR LADY OF IMMACULATE CONCEPTION

Interesting facts about the CATHEDRAL OF OUR LADY OF IMMACULATE CONCEPTION:

This imposing cathedral is the mother church of the catholic diocese of Seychelles. The cathedral is one of the top addresses in the Seychelles. It was built on the site where Father Leon of Avanchers built the first crypt dedicated to the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception in March 1851.

The first and only bishop of the Seychelles, Felix Paul, who died on 21 November 2001, is buried in the cathedral in a grave in the ground. The grave is not visible, but its position is marked by a memorial plaque.

Over the years, the cathedral has undergone numerous renovations. From 1993 to 1994 it was completely renovated except for the exterior walls. The last renovation was completed in 1995, when local sculptor Egbert Marday designed the tabernacle and the carved doors.
