A timeline for corona (COVID-19) disease in the Seychelles

Corona in the Seychelles. The Seychelles are now also affected by the Corona virus. For a long time it looked as if the Seychelles were immune from COVID-19 and one already felt relieved, opened all restrictions, no lockdown. Unfortunately this changed abruptly on 23.06.2020.
The following is a sequence of the Corona events.

A brief overview of corona development in the Seychelles:

03 February 2020
The Seychelles close the borders to and from China (only returning Seychellois are allowed to enter).

Mid - end of March
Return flights are organized for stranded tourists.
The Seychelles are now closing the borders to everyone. No one, except returning Seychellois who have to remain in quarantine for 2 weeks, is allowed to enter the country.

14 March 2020
2 Seychellois returning from Italy tested positive for Covid 19.

18 March 2020
4 positive Covid-19 cases are reported, another 4 possibly positive cases and 8 people are in quarantine.

19 March 2020
The number of infections increases to 6 persons and 2 possible cases. There are 13 persons in quarantine.

20 March 2020
7 positively tested corona cases
2 possibly positive
And 59 people in quarantine

March 31, 2020
10 positive and 166 people in quarantine

6 April 2020
An airport employee is tested positive for Covid, it is assumed that it might be distributed in the community.
Corona has infected over 1.2 million people worldwide.

From 08 April to 29 April 2020 there's a lockdown.
Essential workers are allowed to go to work, all other companies are more or less closed off. The house may only be left for shopping, doctor or other important reason.
The lockdown is applied up to and including 03 May 2020 extended.

June 2020
The Seychelles are considered to be Corona free... the first discussions concerning the reopening of the airport and tourism are published.

23 June 2020
Around 200 African seafarers, a Spanish fishing vessel fleet, will be exchanged.
20 people tested positive for the virus in the preventive antibody test, although official Covid 19 PCR safety certificates from Senegal and Ivory Coast were submitted.
The crew is isolated on the ships.

26 June 2020
The number of infected sailors rises to 59.

06 July 2020
80 sailors have now tested Corona positive.

08 July 2020
6 Seychellois who had contact with the African sailors (luggage, voyage) tested positive.

On 01.08.2020 the airport is to be reopened step by step for tourists from low/medium risk areas.
However, there are some limitations:

  • Covid 19 PCR certificate, not older than 72h (if PCR test is not possible, a rapid antigen test is required)
    For tourists from medium risk areas it must be a Covid 19 PCR certificate.
  • The certificate and all flight and accommodation details must be sent in advance by e-mail to the Seychelles Health Authority
  • The certificate must be presented again on entry
  • Accommodation must be licensed and approved by the health authority
  • Travel insurance with full medical coverage
