Costa neoRiviera and MSC Sinfonia were the first to dock in Port Victoria over the weekend, bringing 1,900 and 1,400 guests respectively, most of them from Europe.
The Seychelles season runs from October to around April, and an increase in cruise passenger arrivals to the islands is expected for the 2017/2018 season.

A total of 36 cruise ships are expected this season, including those of Costa Cruises, a popular cruise operator worldwide that graces the shores of the archipelago. This is an increase from last year, when around 30 cruise ship calls were recorded.

This alone speaks volumes for awards won at the 2017 World Travel Awards, where Seychelles claimed the title of Leading Cruise Destination for the Indian Ocean, while Port Victoria was voted the Leading Cruise Port in the Indian Ocean.

Sherin Francis, executive director of the Seychelles Tourism Board (STB), has reiterated the fact that Seychelles is an ideal destination for cruising as it is an archipelago surrounded by secluded powder-white beaches and a clear turquoise sea.

The Seychelles is becoming increasingly popular among cruisers. The various cruise ship tours this season will give the Seychelles islands the opportunity to showcase themselves to potential visitors and hope that their short experience will whet the appetite for future visits. It is therefore of the utmost importance that their short stays are as real and enriching as possible, " said Ms Francis.

It should be noted that there have been increased efforts to promote cruise tourism in the region.
For example, the development of a new concept - Cruise Africa - was discussed in July as representatives of the Port Management Association for Eastern and Southern Africa, the Cruise Indian Ocean Association and the Seychelles Ports Authority.
In recent years, many efforts have also been made to encourage more cruise ships to include the Vanilla Islands on their voyages.

MSC Sinfonia has already departed for Mauritius after visiting the Seychelles, while Costa neoRiviera is heading to La Reunion before returning to Mauritius on 27 October.

Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation, Ports and Marine, Ambassador Maurice Loustau-Lalanne said, "Our marketing efforts and those of the Vanilla Islands are showing encouraging results for the 2017/18 cruise ship season. We are delighted to have Costa Cruises back on board with a strong programme in the Seychelles and the return of a number of new cruise lines. This year is special as we will be welcoming a number of smaller expedition cruise ships visiting both our inner granite islands and outer coral islands."

Most cruise ships call at Port Victoria on the main island of Mahé, while others call at the other islands of the Indian Ocean archipelago.
