ANSE MAJOR

ANSE MAJOR

Beach in the northwest of Mahé

Interesting facts about the ANSE MAJOR:

The Anse Major is located in the north-west of Mahé. The beach is divided in two by granite rocks. Especially in the back part of the bay you can find coarse grained, almost pebbly sand and a cool river that ends in the sea. There is also a shelter near the beach which is used by boat operators for barbecue.

Shadows are mainly in the morning.

The beach can only be reached by boat trip or via the Anse Major Trail.
This begins at the terminus of the "Bel Ombre" bus at La Scala Restaurant. Here you follow the tarred road uphill (keep right). After about 15-20 minutes there is a large rock plateau on the right with a great view from the Island Silhouette. This is a popular sunset spot with the locals. You can also park here, but parking is limited.
If you follow the tarred road, a few minutes later a staircase with a footpath branches off to the left. From here it is an approx. 1-hour walk over granite splinters & roots with mostly great views. We pass some small creeks, cinnamon & cashew trees and wild vanilla plants.

After about 45 minutes you arrive at a small lookout hut with a great view over the Anse Major.
Over 50% of the trail are in the sun.

The sea at Anse Major is mostly crystal clear and calm. There is often a sloping edge of about 1m in the water and the waves break near the beach. Because of some rocks in the water, water shoes are recommended.
If it is not too strenuous to carry snorkeling equipment over the mountain, you should bring it with you.

Directions:

From Victoria, head northwest on Revolution Avenue /St-Louis Road towards Beau Vallon. Shortly after the Beau Vallon petrol station, there is a turn-off at the police station, here you turn left onto Bel Ombre Road.
At the end of the street at La Scala Restaurant is the terminus of the bus. Follow the small tarred road uphill and keep right. By car it takes about 5 minutes to the trail start.
