The rankings were conducted by Oliver's Travels, an online villa booking site.

The index was calculated based on the annual meat consumption per person, the number of vegetarian restaurants and the number of vegetarian restaurants in relation to the number of inhabitants.

The Seychelles, took first place ahead of Thailand and Malaysia.

This undoubtedly goes far beyond what we eat every day and also in restaurants ", said Desnousse.

However, she said, "We should be careful with the assessment because it is very likely that more travellers eat in restaurants than locals."

On the types of vegetables and fruits available, the nutritionist said that there is a variety but high prices remain a challenge for local consumers.

One of the hotels that provide healthy living in the Seychelles is Le Meridien Fisherman's Cove, located in Bel Ombre in the north of Mahe, the main island.

Julien Jacquin, the hotel's food and beverage manager, said: "We offer vegetarian options on all our menus and are also flexible in preparing a special dish for a guest according to their dietary needs.

Jacquin said that "it's really important to promote healthy living. We offer a salad bar and vegetable soup every day, among other things we do."

He added: "Our chef meets with the guest who is on a diet so they can discuss what they prefer. It's more of a personalised service."

Sony Antat, a food lover, said in conversation that Seychelles' fine dining experiences vary from restaurant to restaurant and that most of them serve vegetables at almost every meal.

The Global Vegetarian Index was created by Oliver's Travel to identify the most vegetarian countries, as October is World Vegetarian Month.
